Product Overview
AMS1117-3.3 is the fixed 3.3 V member of Advanced Monolithic Systems’ AMS1117 low-dropout regulator family. It is intended for simple medium-current linear regulation where a compact three-terminal solution is preferred over a switching converter.
The important design constraint is package dissipation. The regulator converts the input-to-output voltage difference directly into heat, so usable continuous current depends on VIN, load, board copper and ambient conditions rather than the 1 A headline rating alone.

Functional Highlights
Fixed 3.3 V output keeps the external circuit simple
The fixed-output version removes the external resistor divider required by the adjustable AMS1117 variant.
Board thermal resistance determines practical load capability
At elevated VIN, power loss rises quickly with load current. Copper area around the SOT-223 tab should therefore be treated as part of the regulator design.
Applications / Application Fit
- 5 V to 3.3 V post-regulation
- Linear post-regulation after a switching converter
- Existing designs standardized on the AMS1117 pinout and SOT-223 footprint
Design Considerations
Confirm the worst-case input-to-output differential remains compatible with both dropout and thermal requirements.
Place the required output capacitor close to the regulator and follow the manufacturer stability guidance.
Evaluate junction temperature from the real PCB copper area rather than assuming the full 1 A rating is continuously available.
