Product Overview
The MCP4017T-103E/LT is the 10 kΩ extended-temperature version of Microchip’s MCP4017 7-bit volatile digital rheostat in a six-lead SC70 package. It provides 128 programmable resistance positions through an I²C-compatible interface for calibration, gain setting and electronically controlled resistance functions.
The MCP4017 is a rheostat configuration rather than a three-terminal potentiometer: the available resistor path is between terminal B and the wiper. That distinction matters when replacing another digital potentiometer family, because the topology cannot provide an independently accessible A-W-B voltage divider.

Design Considerations
The wiper is volatile and returns to mid-scale after power-on or brownout reset. Firmware should therefore explicitly write the operating value during startup whenever the application depends on a calibrated resistance.
The -103 code defines a nominal 10 kΩ element with a fairly broad end-to-end resistance tolerance. Ratiometric uses are less sensitive to absolute resistance, while rheostat uses should include the end-to-end tolerance and wiper resistance in the error budget.
