Product Overview

The MCP4017T-502E/LT is the 5 kΩ extended-temperature MCP4017 volatile digital rheostat in SC70-6. It offers 128 resistance settings controlled through I²C and is suited to electronic trim, sensor calibration, gain adjustment and set-point functions where firmware can initialize the wiper after power-up.

The -502 resistance code is significant for both dynamic and DC behavior. Microchip characterizes the 5 kΩ device with a 2 MHz typical -3 dB bandwidth, while absolute resistance tolerance and wiper resistance remain part of the error budget for rheostat operation.

Design Considerations

The MCP4017 uses volatile RAM, so the programmed setting is not retained through a power cycle. If the resistance is part of a calibration path, the host should load the saved setting after power-up and after brownout recovery.

At low codes, wiper resistance becomes a larger percentage of the total programmed resistance. This effect is more pronounced in a 5 kΩ device than in a higher-resistance variant and should be included in low-ohmic trim calculations.

For a different 5-kohm digital resistance control topology, compare MCP4018T-502E/LT. Microchip DS22147 identifies MCP4017 as an I2C-controlled rheostat and MCP4018 as an I2C-controlled potentiometer connected to ground. Both -502E/LT versions have 5-kohm nominal resistance and a six-lead SC70 package, but the terminals and supported circuit configurations differ. This is a circuit-topology selection comparison, not a pin-compatible replacement statement.
