High-performance F405 in a 64-pin package

STM32F405RGT6 combines a 168 MHz Arm Cortex-M4 core with single-precision FPU and DSP instructions, 1 MB of Flash and an industrial LQFP-64 package. ST lists 51 I/Os for the exact RGT6 orderable.

The F405 family includes three 12-bit ADCs, two 12-bit DACs, a 16-stream DMA controller, two CAN controllers and USB OTG functions. The important F405/F407 distinction is that ST’s exact product table shows no integrated Ethernet on STM32F405RGT6; Ethernet is a feature of the F407 branch.

Why choose RGT6 instead of an F407 package

RGT6 is attractive when the design needs F4-class CPU performance, 1 MB of code space, FPU/DSP processing, USB and dual CAN but does not need the F407 Ethernet MAC or the larger pin count of 100- or 144-pin packages. The 64-pin footprint keeps board area and pin count lower, but it also makes alternate-function planning more important.

Performance and connectivity trade-offs

  • Compute: 168 MHz Cortex-M4 plus FPU/DSP is a different workload class from the older Cortex-M3 parts.
  • Memory: 1 MB Flash provides substantial firmware headroom without moving to an F407G package.
  • Connectivity: two CAN controllers and USB OTG are integrated; ST lists no Ethernet for this exact F405 orderable.
  • Package: 51 I/Os in LQFP-64 means high-function designs must be checked carefully against the alternate-function map.

System fit

STM32F405RGT6 fits compute-heavy control, signal-processing and USB/CAN-connected embedded systems where 64 pins are sufficient and Ethernet is not a requirement. If Ethernet or a much larger external-interface pin budget is central to the design, an STM32F407 package is the more natural comparison.

Integration points that matter

USB high-speed operation uses the device’s HS OTG controller with ULPI, so a design targeting true high-speed USB must account for the external PHY/interface requirements rather than treating the on-chip full-speed PHY as a high-speed PHY. For CAN, include external transceivers. At 168 MHz, power integrity, clocking, decoupling and the exact LQFP-64 pin multiplexing deserve early PCB attention.
