Product Overview

The MCP4018T-502E/LT is the 5 kΩ extended-temperature version of Microchip’s MCP4018 volatile I²C digital potentiometer in SC70-6. It provides 128 wiper settings while internally connecting terminal B to ground, simplifying grounded-divider applications.

That internal B-to-ground connection is the key topology constraint. The device should not be substituted for a fully floating three-terminal digital potentiometer where both ends of the resistor string must be independently accessible.

Design Considerations

Wiper resistance becomes a larger percentage of the programmed value at low codes. Include it in the divider error budget, especially with the 5 kΩ element.

Because the setting is volatile, firmware should restore the required code after power-up. The grounded B terminal should also be reflected in schematic symbol and PCB review to prevent accidental floating use.

For a different 5-kohm digital resistance control topology, compare MCP4017T-502E/LT. Microchip DS22147 lists this MCP4018 as an I2C-controlled three-terminal potentiometer configuration to ground, while MCP4017 is the two-terminal rheostat configuration. Both -502E/LT codes are 5-kohm SC70-6 options, but the pin functions differ; check wiring before selection. This is a circuit-topology selection comparison, not a pin-compatible replacement statement.
