Product Overview

BQ24074RGTR is a Texas Instruments single-cell linear charger with dynamic power-path management, a 4.4 V regulated system output, and up to 1.5 A programmable battery charge current. Its power-path loop gives the system load priority when input power is limited, reducing battery charge current before the system output is allowed to fall into battery-supplement operation.

Within the BQ2407x family, BQ24074 is differentiated by a higher input-overvoltage threshold and a programmable charge-termination threshold. TI specifies a 4.35 V to 10.2 V recommended input operating range and a 10.5 V typical OVP threshold for this variant, compared with the lower-voltage input window used by several neighboring BQ2407x parts.

The ITERM pin allows the end-of-charge threshold to be set with an external resistor instead of relying only on the internally fixed termination ratio. This matters when the selected cell or charging objective requires a termination current that differs from the default percentage of fast-charge current.

Functional Highlights

The higher OVP threshold changes the usable input-source envelope

BQ24074 uses a 10.5 V typical input-overvoltage threshold and a recommended input operating range extending to 10.2 V. This makes its input envelope materially different from BQ24073 and BQ24075, whose family-table OVP value is 6.6 V typical.

The 28 V absolute input rating remains a stress limit, not a normal charging voltage. For system design, the relevant source range is the BQ24074 recommended operating window together with its DPM behavior, power dissipation, and 10.5 V OVP threshold.

ITERM lets the battery termination current be chosen independently

BQ24074 provides an ITERM pin for an external termination-setting resistor. TI specifies different proportional factors in USB100 mode and the other input-current modes, so the same resistor relationship should not be applied without checking the active EN1/EN2 mode.

This is an exact-variant selection point: BQ24073 uses a TD termination-disable input instead, while BQ24074 gives the designer control over the termination threshold itself. The desired end-of-charge current should therefore be part of choosing between these neighboring devices.

Power-path control still determines the charge rate under system load

The 1.5 A charge-current target is available only when the source and thermal conditions allow it. DPPM reduces battery charge current when the system output approaches its regulation threshold, and the battery can supplement OUT if input power remains insufficient.

A design using the wider BQ24074 input range still needs separate calculations for source-current limit, system-load current, programmed battery current, and linear-charger heat dissipation.

Design Considerations

  • Program ITERM for the active input-current mode. The datasheet uses different termination factors in USB100 mode and the other charging modes; verify the resistor equation under the mode the product will actually use.
  • Do not confuse 10.5 V OVP with 28 V normal operation. The recommended BQ24074 input operating range ends at 10.2 V even though the IN pin has a wider absolute rating.
  • Reserve source current for the system load. When OUT demand approaches the available input budget, DPPM reduces battery charging before system output is sacrificed.
  • Check termination behavior when DPPM, VIN-DPM, or thermal regulation is active. TI disables termination detection while these loops are reducing the charging rate.
  • Design the exposed-pad QFN for linear power loss. Higher input voltage increases thermal dissipation for a given battery voltage and charge current, which can make the 125°C thermal loop the practical charge-current limit.

Product Status and Exact Order Code

Manufacturer status: Active / Production

Texas Instruments lists BQ24074RGTR as a 16-pin VQFN RGT device supplied in a 3000-piece large tape-and-reel carrier with Level-2-260C-1 YEAR MSL classification and an operating-temperature listing of −40°C to +85°C. The package addendum currently lists BZF and NXK as possible part markings. BQ24074RGTT uses the same RGT package in a 250-piece small tape-and-reel carrier.
