Product Overview
MCP2515-I/SO is a stand-alone CAN 2.0B controller that connects to a host MCU over SPI. It handles CAN framing, filtering and transmit/receive buffering, but it is not a physical-layer CAN transceiver; a separate CAN transceiver is still required between the controller and the bus.
The controller supports CAN rates up to 1 Mb/s and an SPI clock up to 10 MHz. Two receive buffers, six acceptance filters, two masks and three transmit buffers reduce the amount of message handling that must be performed directly by the host MCU.

Selection Notes
Do not describe MCP2515-I/SO as a CAN transceiver; it is the protocol controller and requires an external physical-layer transceiver.
The -I suffix selects the -40 to +85 °C industrial range; /SO selects the 18-lead 7.5 mm SOIC package.
The exact order code uses the standard qualification field. Microchip offers automotive-qualified special ordering codes, but that must not be attached to MCP2515-I/SO.
The 1 µA standby figure is typical in Sleep mode and must not be presented as active operating current.
Lifecycle and Procurement Context
Microchip Technology lifecycle status for this exact orderable is In Production. Lifecycle status is included for procurement planning and does not imply HKEQGOO stock, lead time or delivery availability.
For the same Microchip MCP2515 stand-alone CAN controller in SOIC-18 with the extended −40°C to +125°C grade, compare MCP2515-E/SO. Microchip’s MCP2515 datasheet distinguishes Industrial (I): −40°C to +85°C from Extended (E): −40°C to +125°C; temperature grade is the first-order selection difference on the same SOIC-18 package.
