Product Overview

LT4295IUFD#PBF combines a Power over Ethernet powered-device interface with a forward/flyback DC/DC controller for IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt systems. It supports high-power PD implementations up to the 71.3 W class and integrates detection, classification and power-interface control ahead of the isolated converter stage.

The controller uses an external hot-swap MOSFET rather than forcing surge and conduction loss into an internal pass device. That architecture allows the designer to choose MOSFET resistance and thermal performance for the intended PD power level.

PoE and Converter Considerations

PD classification and the DC/DC power stage should be designed as one power budget. Cable power, classification level, converter efficiency and downstream load determine whether the requested application power is achievable at the load.

Using an external hot-swap MOSFET gives flexibility in on-resistance and surge capability, but also makes MOSFET SOA, inrush behavior and PCB thermal design part of the protection path.
