Product Overview
The MP8017GL-Z is an IEEE 802.3af-compatible PoE powered-device solution from MPS in a compact 19-pin QFN package. It integrates the PoE PD interface, the DC/DC control function and the hot-swap power MOSFET, reducing the external circuitry required for an isolated powered-device supply.
Its active-clamp flyback architecture supports primary-side or secondary-side regulation. In primary-side-regulated designs, MPS describes a feedback method that samples the output without an auxiliary transformer winding, while switching operation can extend to 650 kHz to support smaller magnetic components.

Design Considerations
The high switching-frequency capability is primarily a size and magnetics optimization tool, not a requirement to operate every design at 650 kHz. Transformer loss, MOSFET switching loss, EMI and control-loop behavior should be checked at the chosen operating point.
Primary-side regulation can reduce optocoupler and auxiliary-winding requirements, but transformer design and sampling conditions remain part of regulation accuracy. Use the MP8017 reference design equations and transformer guidance rather than treating the converter as a drop-in generic PoE controller.
