Product Overview
The MCP4011-103E/SN is the exact Microchip orderable part for the MCP4011 10 kΩ digital potentiometer in an 8-lead SOIC package. It uses a simple Up/Down interface rather than SPI or I²C, which makes it useful for low-cost digitally adjustable analog functions that only need sequential wiper movement.
The device provides 64 volatile wiper positions and powers up at mid-scale. The -103 code identifies the 10 kΩ resistance option, while the E/SN suffix identifies the extended-temperature SOIC-8 orderable form.

Design Considerations
Because the wiper position is volatile, the MCP4011 does not retain the previous setting after power is removed. Firmware or external control logic must restore the desired position after startup if mid-scale is not acceptable.
The 10 kΩ code is part of the exact orderable identity. A different MCP4011 resistance code uses the same control interface and package but changes the analog transfer function and step size, so it is not a transparent substitution.

The MCP4021-202E/MS also uses an Up/Down interface, but retains a wiper setting in nonvolatile memory and has a different nominal resistance. This MCP4011 is a volatile 10 kΩ choice; the two are not automatic substitutes. See the digital potentiometer category for further comparison.
