Product Overview
SN74HC164PWR is the compact TSSOP implementation of the HC164 8-bit serial-in/parallel-out shift register. It retains the no-latch architecture: each shift immediately propagates through the visible parallel outputs.
PWR therefore solves board-area/assembly density, not the intermediate-output-state limitation. A design using HC164 for LEDs or control lines must still decide whether visible ripple during serial loading is acceptable.
Compared with the SOIC DR order code, PWR saves footprint and is supplied as a 2000-piece reel while preserving the same logic function.

Functional Highlights
TSSOP reduces area without changing shift behavior
It is appropriate when the existing HC164 circuit is valid but the board needs denser routing.
No storage register keeps latency/components low
Data appears without a second latch clock, useful when immediate bit-by-bit output is wanted rather than atomic word updates.
Design Considerations
- Use external/later-stage blanking if outputs must not show intermediate shift patterns.
- Verify TSSOP assembly/rework capability versus the larger SOIC version.
- Keep clock routing clean enough to avoid unintended shifts on noisy control lines.
