Product Overview
CD4051BM96 is the long-established CMOS 4051 8:1 analog multiplexer in a 2500-piece SOIC reel. Its main attraction is broad 3–20 V operation, industry-standard pin/function compatibility and proven use in legacy industrial/consumer analog routing.
It is not a low-Ron modern precision mux: the family quotes about 125 Ω typical on-resistance at 15 V. That can be perfectly acceptable into high-impedance loads but creates gain/settling errors with low source/load resistance.
For redesigns, modern TMUX parts may add 1.8 V logic, lower Ron or protection features. CD4051 remains valuable where wide supply range and established 4051 compatibility matter more than those improvements.

Functional Highlights
Legacy compatibility can outweigh newer switch metrics
A mature board using the industry-standard 4051 pinout/supply scheme may prioritize qualified footprint/behavior over a new mux with better Ron.
High Ron makes source/load impedance part of the transfer function
Into a high-impedance ADC input the error can be small; into a low-resistance network the switch resistance can materially change gain and settling.
Design Considerations
- Include 125 Ω-class switch resistance and its variation in the analog error/settling model.
- Verify logic thresholds for the actual CD4051B supply; do not assume modern 1.8 V-compatible control at high supply.
- Retain external protection for signals that can exceed the analog supply rails.
