Functional Highlights
Gauging and protection share the same current-sense path
The coulomb counter measures the differential voltage across SRP and SRN while the protection logic also uses current information to evaluate overcurrent and short-circuit events. The sense resistor is therefore a joint gauging/protection component. Reducing resistance lowers dissipation but also reduces signal amplitude; increasing it improves signal level while increasing I²R loss.
High-side FET drive supports a smart-pack protection architecture
The device controls protection FETs while maintaining a pack-based communication and measurement architecture. FET ratings, gate network, pack connector arrangement, and fault-recovery policy should be reviewed as one system rather than as separate gauge and protector blocks.
Authentication belongs to the manufacturing flow
SHA-256 capability can be used to authenticate a battery pack, but the security benefit depends on provisioning, host challenge/response implementation, key handling, and manufacturing controls. Adding the device does not by itself create an authenticated pack unless those processes are implemented correctly.
Design Considerations
- Select the shunt from both measurement resolution and pack loss. The 1 mΩ to 20 mΩ range spans very different voltage drop and dissipation at high current.
- Choose high-side or low-side current sensing before laying out the pack. The approaches change common-mode and connector/reference routing.
- Coordinate protection thresholds with cell and FET ratings. Voltage, current, short-circuit and temperature settings must match actual pack components.
- Treat authentication keys as production assets. Device capability is only one part of a secure pack-authentication system.
- Use the low-power modes deliberately. SLEEP, SHIP, SHELF and SHUTDOWN serve different storage and runtime goals.
