Device Overview

MP6905GS-Z is an MPS fast-turn-off synchronous-rectifier controller / diode-emulator IC for flyback converters, supplied in SOIC-8. It drives an external MOSFET in place of a secondary-side Schottky rectifier and senses the MOSFET drain-source voltage to control turn-on, conduction, and turn-off.

Engineering Selection Notes

The approximately 30 mV figure is part of the MP6905 control behavior around the external synchronous MOSFET; it is not a generic fixed ??orward drop??that should be read like a passive diode rating. During conduction, the controller adjusts gate drive so the sensed MOSFET VDS stays near the regulation level when current becomes small, then turns the gate off as the sensed voltage approaches the turn-off threshold.

The 8 V to 24 V VDD specification is the controller supply range. It should be checked against the actual auxiliary or secondary-side bias rail over startup, steady state, and line/load variation; it is not an environmental or measurement range.

Turn-off speed must be read with its test condition. The datasheet separates propagation delay from total turn-off delay and shows total delay increasing with gate/load capacitance. For MOSFET selection, RDS(on), gate charge, rectifier current, and the controller’s VDS regulation behavior must be considered together rather than choosing the lowest possible RDS(on) in isolation.

Lifecycle and Procurement

MPS currently lists MP6905 as Not Recommended for New Designs while continuing production for existing customers. MPS points designers toward MP6906 for new designs, so MP6905GS-Z is primarily relevant to maintenance, replacement, or existing-BOM sourcing where the original part is already specified.
