Product Overview
LM2596SX-5.0/NOPB is the fixed 5 V tape-and-reel TO-263 member of Texas Instruments’ LM2596 SIMPLE SWITCHER family. It integrates the power switch required for a non-isolated buck converter and is intended to reduce external circuitry to the inductor, catch diode, input/output capacitors and supporting layout.
The main design question is not only whether the load is below 3 A. Inductor saturation current, diode current and reverse-voltage rating, capacitor ripple current and ESR, switching-loop layout and package temperature all affect whether the converter can sustain the required operating point.

Functional Highlights
Wide input range supports common intermediate rails
The 40 V upper input limit allows use from 12 V and 24 V class sources when normal operation and expected transients stay within the datasheet limits.
Fixed 5 V output removes the external feedback divider
The fixed-output variant simplifies the voltage-setting network, but the magnetic, diode and capacitor selections still need to follow TI’s design procedure for the actual VIN and load range.
Applications / Application Fit
- 12 V or 24 V class rails stepped down to 5 V
- Industrial and embedded power rails that need a simple non-isolated buck stage
- Service or BOM-controlled builds requiring the exact TI orderable code
Design Considerations
Select the inductor for both required inductance and saturation current at the worst-case operating point.
Keep the switch-current loop compact and follow TI layout guidance to reduce ringing and EMI.
Check TO-263 thermal performance and copper area at high load, especially when VIN is well above 5 V.
