Product Overview
The MCP2221A-I/ML is Microchip’s industrial-temperature QFN implementation of the MCP2221A USB-to-I2C/UART bridge. It lets a USB host communicate with UART and I2C/SMBus peripherals without requiring a separate microcontroller firmware layer for the basic bridge function.
The exact ML suffix identifies a 16-lead 4 × 4 mm QFN package. The device supports UART rates from 300 to 460800 baud, I2C host operation to 400 kHz and four multifunction GP pins. Because the part number is MCP2221A rather than MCP2221AT, this catalog form is the standard non-tape-and-reel ordering version.

Design Considerations
The QFN version saves board area but requires the correct thermal/ground pad and assembly process. Do not substitute the TSSOP package without checking pin mapping and footprint.
I2C performance is host-controlled through USB transactions, so application latency is not identical to a local MCU hardware I2C peripheral even though the bus itself can run at 400 kHz. Use the bridge architecture for host-connected control and configuration rather than hard real-time bus timing.
