Questions about LM386MX-1/NOPB SOIC-8-150mil - Texas Instruments ?

Device Overview

LM386MX-1/NOPB is the SOIC-8 tape-and-reel version of Texas Instruments’ LM386M-1 low-voltage mono audio power amplifier. The -1 grade is intended for low-voltage operation and is commonly used where a small speaker amplifier must run from a simple battery or low-voltage rail with few external parts.

Engineering Selection Notes

The most important exact-variant check is the supply range. The LM386 family includes higher-voltage grades, but LM386MX-1/NOPB is the -1 version and should be designed around the lower-voltage 4 V to 12 V range rather than borrowing an 18 V family headline from another grade.

The output-power number also needs its distortion and load condition. Roughly 325 mW at 6 V into 8 Ω is a 10% THD reference, so it is not the same as a low-distortion continuous listening level. Speaker impedance, supply voltage, allowable distortion, enclosure efficiency, and output-coupling capacitor size all affect the practical acoustic result.

Gain is internally fixed at 20 unless pins 1 and 8 are used to bypass part of the internal feedback path. Raising gain toward 200 can help with small input signals, but it also increases sensitivity to input noise, layout coupling, and hum. Gain should therefore be set from the real source amplitude rather than maximized by default.
