Product Overview
TCA6416ARTWR scales the translating TCA64xx architecture to 16 GPIOs. It is useful when a processor with limited low-voltage pins must control or monitor a larger higher-voltage peripheral bank through one I²C interface.
The two 8-bit banks share one interrupt/reset framework and register interface, so firmware gains pin count without 16 direct MCU pins. Hardware reset returns the device to input defaults if software loses synchronization.
RTWR is the 4 mm WQFN 3000-piece reel option. It saves board area versus a TSSOP-24 implementation but needs correct exposed-pad soldering and routing fan-out.

Functional Highlights
16-bit expansion can replace many discrete level translators plus GPIO pins
When the P-port and I²C domains differ, one TCA6416A can combine level-domain bridging with remote digital control. It is not intended for high-speed data signals; these are control/status GPIOs.
One address pin limits same-bus population
Only two address selections are available, so designs needing many identical 16-bit expanders must plan muxing/additional buses or choose a family with more address combinations.
Design Considerations
- Plan bus topology early if more than two TCA6416A devices would share one I²C segment.
- Initialize output data before direction changes to prevent undesired external switching.
- Treat QFN pad/thermal ground assembly as part of production validation.
