Product Overview
TCA8418RTWR is not merely a large GPIO expander; its primary function is autonomous matrix-keypad scanning. Eighteen pins can form row/column matrices supporting up to 80 keys while hardware debouncing and an event FIFO reduce MCU polling and interrupt load.
The 10-byte FIFO records key press/release events so firmware can service the keypad in bursts. This is especially useful on HMIs where the host sleeps or is busy, but software must drain the FIFO quickly enough during rapid multi-key activity.
Unused keypad pins can serve as GPIO, giving the designer a tradeoff between matrix size and general-purpose expansion. The 1.65–3.6 V supply makes it better suited to modern low-voltage processors than 5 V-oriented legacy keypad logic.
